The Songs Of “Grandson Of An Irishman” August 2017

Grandson Of An Irishman

This is two stories. The verses are the story of my grandparents

coming to America in the early 20th century.

The chorus is my observation of St. Patrick's Day in America

and a little reaction to snobby “Irish Sessions” with all their

rules and exclusions.

I'd Rather Be Normal Instead

This is a humorous comment on mental illness,

namely OCD, Anxiety and Bi Polar, from which I and friends have

suffered greatly over the years.

Home To Montana

Redneck song about living in Montana. Based on myself

and people I've known.

Strokes Of The Brush

Can't see the forest for the trees becomes can't see the painting

for the strokes of the brush. The minutia of life can keep one from

seeing the greater picture in life. Guilty as charged!

My Songs

Fun little ditty about songwriting and songwriters.

No One's As Perfect As Me

Inspired by a single friend of mine who tried to explain why he could

not find someone. Enough said!

Getting Old Ain't For Pussies

Something my best friend said to me on the telephone. Sheer profundity!

Montana Spring

Written in March 2017 when I was starving for spring.

Spring became my missing lover.

My Daughter's Wedding Song

Written and recorded the day before my daughter's wedding.

My wife was in critcal condition after an auto wreck and I could not attend.

My wedding gift to both my beautiful daughters.

Highwood To Helena

The seed was planted at an Irish Session when a colleague talked about a double gig

in Helena and Highwood Montana on the same night. I said that we should write a songcalled “Highwood To Helena”, and I did.

Not Enough Time Not Enough Smoke

The Sperm Donor's song. Enough said.

The River

Election time fall 2016. America so divided.

These Old Smokey Walls

An Ode to the places where I have always loved to play   my music.

Grandson Of An Irishman  Album Lyrics

The Grandson of An Irishman

I'm the grandson of an Irishman

He of County Claire

And the grandson of an Irish lass

From the Emerald Isle oh so fair

Me grandmother was a singer

She sailed alone to far New York

Brave journey for a colleen so young

So far from County Cork

         Chorus

Saint Patty's Day

Everyone's an Irishman

Sing rebel songs and drink their whiskey neat

Leprechauns. Green beer and phony brogues

Becoming Irish is fait complete

How I wish it were that simple

Though I really do not mind

Though I grew up with the Irishmen

Still their essence I could not find

In the summer of 1911

James sailed to Boston Bay

Forever free of the Black and Tans

To me that's all he'd ever say

1918 Boston Police Strike

He lost his job and all he had

Became a railroad dick in Manhattan New York

Still likely Irish lad

        Chorus

In New York James met his Bridie

A cold water flat they made their home

They raised up two fine Irish lads

No better life to them was known

And the Army took my father

There he met his prairie bride

I was born the first of 5 children

And they raised us all with loving pride

          Chorus

Though I grew up with the Irishmen

Still their essence I could not find

Cannot find

I'd Rather Be Normal Instead

I'm up and I'm down

I bounce all around

Nothing good lasts too long

I''m to and I'm fro

A bit crazy you know

Can't seem to find out just what's wrong

I'll break out in song

Then the feeling is gone

Snatched away by some aberrant thought

For hours on end

I go off the deep end

Creating more problems than not

          Chorus

Some say get a grip

Take a pharmacy trip

Get control of your head

Though I do really care

I'm pulling out all my hair

I'd rather be normal instead

My mind is made up

I'm shit out of luck

I think that I'm losing my mind

And I'd just like to say

That I'll soon be OK

I'm crazy but sure I'm not blind

I wallow in guilt

Behind walls that I've built

Where no one can see me at play

I punish myself

Put my life on the shelf

Just another long Bi Polar day

Home To Montana

I think I'll buy me a pickup

And a cow herding dog

Get me a guitar

Move away from the smog

Some shit kicking boots

And some shit to step in

Lost my place in the big rat race

There's just no way to win

             Chorus

I'm going home to Montana

Where the living is best

Gonna buy me a place

In the heart of the West

Got my crusty old friends

And a woman who really shines

The last best place

Is the first last place

I'm never gonna find

I'll get me a horse

The damn things make me sneeze

And live upwind

In that warm Chinook breeze

And I'll wear a bandana

Just like that song says

Drink local beer

Pee off my porch

Buy my fireworks on the rez

I'll need me a rifle

Shotgun, pistol too

Muzzleloader, compound bow

Any fishing pole will do

Maybe an old camper

A car topper boat

Cause I quit my chew

Need something to do

Any proof that hope still floats

              Chorus

Strokes of the Brush

Getting older

But no wiser

Killing time is killing me

Neither living

Nor Budweiser

Has much effect on changing me

       Chorus

Still I'm feeling

So damned alone

Same as when I was young

And the only place

That I feel at home

I s the place

Where my hat is hung

Got a pretty wife

Two grown up kids

A grand daughter coming up

And the knowing that I'm loved

You'd think for me

Would be enough

        Chorus

I've always known

Since I was small

That I think way too much

Can't see the beauty

Of the painting

For the strokes of the brush

       Chorus

Getting older

But not wiser

Killing time is killing me

And the knowing that I'm loved

Yes you'd think

Would set me free

My Songs

All I ever wanted to do

Was write and play my songs

Other things have come and gone

Never did last too long

There's a need deep

Inside of me

To play my homemade tunes

To communicate with a world apart

Alone in a crowded room

          Chorus

My thoughts

My mind

No one else tells me what to say

My words

My rhyme

Only melodies hold sway

Some kinds of people like myself

Find life a daily trial

We sometimes can't get in step

With a world onsessed with style

Don't give a damn

What others say

Yet in secret we still care

We hide away our deepest fears

While songs lay pur souls bare

          Chorus

So when you hear a brand new song

Take time and lend an ear

Probably comes from some faceless soul

Never to appear

Take a chance

Engage your mind

Experience the vibe

It's only when you listen well

We truly feel alive

           Chorus

No One's As Perfect As Me

I'm always searching for that special one

To meet me, complete me and hurt me none

Every time that I think that my searching is done

I find that it's just not to be

          Chorus

I've searched high and low

And searched far and wide

Searched coast to coast

And searched the world wide

Still I've nothing to show

And no blushing bride

Cause no one's as perfect as me

We all have our match or so they say

One who journeys through life in much the same way

A lover who's sexy and a friend who will stay

Just someone who's my cup of tea

           Chorus

I've courted beauties of great intellect

Sought out the one's others seem to neglect

Friends point out spinsters for me to inspect

Finding fault where others can't see

            Chorus

She must be pretty and possessed of a brain

Be good in bed and act mostly sane

Embrace all my vanities and take all the blame

And want to be perfect for me

            Chorus

There's just no one as perfect as me

Getting Old Ain't For Pussies

           Chorus

Getting old ain't for pussies

Life can be so hard

The longer you last

The older you are

There's no way to win

But you can still be a star

Drink life to the fullest

And belly up to the bar

Some just give up living

Nothing left round the bend

They act sad and helpless

As though life's through with them

They bitch and they moan

To all kith and kin

Youth's wasted on the young

Start living again

Take life as it comes

What choice have you got

Reach out your hand

And grab you a spot

Greet every day

Get your ass out of bed

Once more to the breach

You can sleep when you're dead

Being happy and free

Is just state of mind

Open your heart

Seek and ye shall find

Life should be savored

And lived till the end

Grab life by the bollocks

Sing Carpe Diem

Chorus

Getting old ain't for pussies

Life can be so hard

The longer you last

The older you are

But you're still in the game

Always playing to win

Grab life by the bollocks

Sing Carpe Diem

Grab life by the bollocks

Sing Carpe Diem

Montana Spring

Oh how I yearn for you

Like a lover long lost

The warmth of your touch

The retreat of the frost

The caress of your breeze

Makes my heart sing

Oh how I love you

Montana Spring

Days grow longer

Life stirs anew

The frost loses sway

And yields to the dew

The feeling of youth

Despite all our years

Gives hope to us all

And calm to our fears

Chorus

Montana Spring

You enliven my soul

With the unbridled wonder

Of a newly born foal

Montana Spring

If you only could know

My blood runs hot for you

In the late winter snow

New life is born

And old life renews

There's so much to see

And so much to do

I welcome the sunday

The days growing long

I bask in your warmth

As I write you this song

Chorus

Montana Spring

You enliven my soul

With the unbridled wonder

Of a newly born foal

Montana Spring

If you only could know

My blood runs hot for you

In the late winter snow

My Daughter's Wedding Song

My daughter's all grown up

It's time to let her go

A woman in all her glory

With wants and needs I know

It's every father's duty

To step aside for the man she chose

To leave behind my baby girl

Is the hardest thing I've ever known

        Chorus

So hush G

Your Daddy's here

To hold your hand and calm your fear

And I'll walk you down the aisle

On your wedding day

On your wedding day

I wish you all the joy

That true love can only bring

And I give you to this man you love

Who has given you his ring

May you both be blessed

In this sacred bond

Start your life together

As I sing your wedding song

Chorus

So hush G

Your Daddy's here A D

To hold your hand and calm your fear

And I'll walk you down the aisle G

On your wedding day

On your wedding day

From Highwood To Helena

She came to me in Montana

From her home so far away

She gambled everything she had

She knew she'd come to stay

A city girl fromm far far east

Much farther than you know

Never seen the antelope run

Nor felt the Chinook blow

            Chorus

From Highwood to Helena

I see you in my mind

Your voice is in the wind

Just searching for a rhyme

Been an unsung lonely run

For this old songwriting man

I'll write youa love songwriting

Be your one man band

True love she knew so little of

But she made me understand

I only hope I can be good enough

To be her only man

She came to me in Montana

From her home so far away

She gambled everything she had

And I knew she'd come to sta

Not Enough Time

Not Enough Smoke

There's not enough time

Not enough smoke

Tell your troubles goodbye

With just one tok

It's living that's hard

It's time you awoke

Cause there's not enough time

And not enough smoke

Love was so hard

It made you choke

Just playing your card

Kept dodging the rope

Couldn't see no future

Couldn't feel no hope

Not enough time

Not enough smoke

       Chorus

You think your life's been so damn tough

And still you've got nothing left to say

Cause when the seas get too rough

You always come about and sail away

And now you've had a chance to shine

Thought perhaps you just might stay

But for you there'll never be enough time

For all the smoke to just blow away

And turnabout is just fair play

There's not enough highs

And too many lows

Not enough whys

With nothing to show

Never lived your dreams

You say they're all broke

Just not enough time

Not enough smoke

Chorus

Break

Not enough time

Not enough smoke

Not enough time

Not enough smoke

The River

Took myself down to the river

Just to see what I could see

River's flowing

Oh so high

Hope it don't run away with me

Clouds are hovering dark and angry

Horizon seems so very close

Maybe lightening

Will soon have me

Bring on what we fear the most

           Chorus

So let's not forget what really matters

That which made our country great

Remember how we felt on 9/11

Do it now

Before it's too late

We are angry and divided

And afraid we'll lose our way

In division

We need be united

To live through another day

It's the power and the money

That lurks behind those righteous calls

Urging all

To battle one another

A house divided can only fall

        Chorus

Took myself on down to the river

Just to see what I could see

River's flowing

Oh so high

Flowing to a place I cannot see

Flowing to a place I cannot see

Flowing to a place don't want to be

These Old Smokey Walls

These Old Smokey walls

And the stories they hold

Stale beer and cigrette smoke

Memories turned to gold

People laughing people crying

All the good and all the bad

Singing Honkey Tonk Music

Some songs happy some songs sad

         Chorus

And I've always played my songs there

From Montana to Alaska way

I've seen right and I've seen wrong there

So many places in my day

I've offered comfort and found hope there

When I've been in an awful state

I've known love and seen hate's stare

Drowned my sorrows and toasted fate

There's been blood on the floor

Long barreled Ruger .44s

And there were times when I swore

I wouldn't do it anymore

Played my songs to empty tables

When I sang just for myself

Still I've played to rowdy happy folks

Who put their problems on the shelf

        Chorus

What I guess I'm trying to say

Is that people need a place

Somewhere to get away

From the problems that they face

A sometimes getaway

From that day to day life

That would sweep us all away

And bury us in strife

         Chorus

And I've always played my songs there

From Montana to Alaska way

I've seen right and I've seen wrong there

So many places in my day

I've offered comfort and found hope there

When I've been in an awful state

I've known love and seen hate's stare

Drowned my sorrows and toasted fate

I've known love and seen hate's stare

Drowned my sorrows and toasted fate

Lyrics For Lucky Girl

Buffalo Roy                                                                                    12/21/2017

G C G D G

Buffalo Roy was a good ol' boy

He crowed to the world

Of his power and his joy

His world was his kingdom

All the girls were his toys

Buffalo Roy was a good ol' boy

Buffalo Roy was king of the flock

He took what he could

He was cock o' the walk

He preened and he strutted

Had his life in a lock

Buffalo Roy was king of the flock

            Chorus   Em D Am Em    G D Am C G

Buffalo Roy

You better take care

Buffalo Roy

You better beware

Buffalo Roy

If you don't stop

Your future may lie

In a farm woman's pot

Break

Buffalo Roy he lived by the gun

He worked very hard

For his day in the sun

He threatened and he lied

Till there's nowhere to run

Buffalo Roy he lived by the gun

Buffalo Roy your day will come

When the party's all over

And the end has begun

Who will remember

When all's said and done

Buffalo Roy all the world they will shun

Break

Buffalo Roy was a good ol' boy

He crowed to the world

Of his power and his joy

I wonder that I'm going home

Going home

No goals to meet

No odds to beat

I wonder that my life's so sweet

Now that I have you

Chorus 3x F C G Am F C G C

True love is something rare

Left for those who truly dare

To put it all out on the line

All pretention left behind

But it's never been hard loving you

Easiest thing I'll ever do

You're the music I'm the ryhme

Never trouble keeping time

I wonder that you've chosen me

How could this be

What did you see

I wonder that you set me free

So I could be with you

I wonder at the love you've shown

When we're all alone

And how we've grown

I wonder that I've such a home

Living life with you

Chorus

Be Not Afraid                                                             1/7/2018

DG

Give me a place Lord

Where I'm not afraid

A time and a space Lord

To greet every day

Life can be daunting

The piper be paid

Give me a place Lord

Where I'm not afraid

Chorus               3x Bm A G Bm A D

Be not afraid

Let it fade all away

Be not afraid

Just all fade away

So take me home now

Where I'm not afraid

Shine your light Lord

On the problems we've made

Life is so fragile

Like the plans we have laid

Oh let me go Lord

Where I'm not afraid

Chorus

Let me wake up

No longer afraid

To see all my worries

Beginning to fade

Life is too short Lord

To sit in the shade

Oh take me home now

Let me be not afraid

Oh take me home now

Let me be not afraid

Lucky Girl

1/22/2018

Intro

D F#7 Bm D7 G F#7 Bm Em A D

She's such a lucky girl

She does not realize

Her life seems so unfruitful

Will she ever win the prize

And now she sits and ponders all the hows and whys

Can life be any different

For one who really tries

She has her hopes and dreams

Like everybody does

Certain expectations

When it comes to push and shove

Seldom life seems to go her own way

Still hoping some good fortune

Will carry her the day

            Chorus           G D A Bm

So dream on Lucky girl

Lost in an unlucky world

It's something gained, it's something lost

To be a lucky girl

                                    G D A D

So dream on Lucky girl

Make your own lucky world

Don't forget there's always a cost

To be a lucky girl

Piano Break               D F#7 Bm D7 G F#7 Bm Em A D

It's best to count one's blessings

See the glass half full

Optimism's better

When pushing comes to pull

If you cannot feel the warmth for the itching of the wool

You'll go crashing through your life

Like some China shop bull

Is life's just what you make it

Or the other way around

Nature vs nurture

Or something more profound

Is it destiny or fate that leads us where we're bound

Lifting ourselves up

After life has knocked us down

            Chorus           G D A Bm

So dream on Lucky girl

Lost in an unlucky world

It's something gained, it's something lost

To be a lucky girl

                                    G D A D

So dream on Lucky girl

Make your own lucky world

Don't forget there's always a cost

Nearly everybody's got one

Ubiquitous so they are

Those glowing little plastic slabs

Simple tools they've come so far

They manage both our time and space

21st century nicotine

Telling us just where to go

Not a clue to where we've been

F C G Am      F C Am          F C G Am      G Am

They're our sage and they're our sirens

Guide to what we're all about

The oracle of daily life

We cannot do without

And if we should lose our way

Guiding light they will provide

Expediting quick return

To the safety of the hive

            Chorus          F C G Am      F C Am          F C G Am      G Am

So look me up on Facebook

Or ring me on my cell

Post it all on Twitter

Or text me just as well

I'm really very busy

When I'll answer time will tell

Lost out here in cyberspace

Alexander Graham Bell

Connected yet so far apart

Dearth of common courtesy

Not having to look in someone's eyes

Rudeness comes so easily

Using words we'd never dare

To someone face to face

Safely insulated

Secure in cyberspace

Nearly everybody's got one

Ubiquitous so they are

Those glowing little plastic slabs

Simple tools they've come so far

Never such community

Yet so many still alone

Will you answer when I call you up

Or just hang up the phone

D C G

I've thought of home

As a place not yet finalized

Something shown

But never realized

And for some that's all home will ever be

The price you pay

For living  life too free

Live for today

It's youth's greatest gift

Tomorrow comes

And fortunes will surely shift

Find your home when the stars are all aligned

In a young man's view

There will always be time

            Chorus D C G

They say home is where your heart is

Your heart is in your home

Something to take everywhere

No matter how far you roam

It's people you should love

More than houses, gold or land

Its somewhere deep inside yourself

A final place to make your stand

The coming of age

Brings a longing for hearth and home

Friends say it's strange

This living of life on loan

Now life's debt is coming payment due

Set your sights

To thine own heart be true

There's no more time

For an old man's regret

The game's not over

And you ain't quite dead yet

Sail away on a different tack

Set your course

Never looking back

            Chorus

I've thought of home

As a place not yet finalized

Something  shown

But never realized

And for some that's all home will ever be

The price you pay

For living  life too free

12/21/2017

D G D Em A

My heroes turned out to be different

From the people I thought that they were

We put them on pedestals where no one can live

Never having to look in the mirror

It's only as I got older

Came to see them for who they really are

While still trying not to judge them

Think it's time that I raised up the bar

                        Chorus   G D Bm G D A D

So my heroes turned out to be assholes

Showing us all how to live

Playing their roles

And selling their souls

While they took all the love we could give

My heroes turned out to be something

That I didn't want them to be

Faults and problems all their own

With little relation to me

And heroes can be so fragile

We use them so vicariously

Perhaps their behavior only reflects

What we truly ourselves want to be

                        Chorus

So my heroes turned out to be assholes

Teaching us all how to live

Playing their roles

And selling their souls

While they took all the love we could give

When our heroes are found to be wanting

We maybe should all share the blame

For letting them think they were special

And giving them fortune and fame

And so I thank you all my old heroes

I'm sorry that I could not see

That heroes are really just human

Trying to be what we want them to be

                        Chorus

So my heroes turned out to be assholes

Teaching us all how to live

Playing their roles

And selling their souls

While they took all the love we could give

Yes my heroes turned out to be assholes

Telling us all how to live

2x Playing their roles

And selling their souls

While they took all the love we could give

Out Walking InThe Rain

1/23/2018

A D F# Bm E A E A

I've been walking in the rain

Washing my blues all away

Nothing ever seems the same

Out walking in the rain

Who needs fortune and fame

On such a beautiful day

There's so much to be gained

Out walking in the rain

Chorus E A D A E A

There's nothing like a warm summer rain

Little lost but everything to gain

So let your inner child out to play

Listen what he might have to say

Nothing ever feels the same

Out walking in the rain

Moisture dripping from the trees

Strolling along a country lane

Raindrops nuturing the earth

Out walking in the rain

Woodland smelling of rebirth

Something I may yet attain

Chorus

There's nothing like a warm summer rain

Little lost but everything to gain

So let your inner child out to play

Listen what he might have to say

Piano break

Chorus

I'm out walking in the rain

A warm and breezy summer day

All my worries lie restrained

Softly carry me away

I've been walking in the rain

Washing my blues all away

Only have yourself to blame

If you're not out walking in the rain

Love Binds You

2/12/2018

G C   Capo 2       Key of A

Chorus

Love finds you

Love reminds you

Of your place in life

Love binds you

Stays behind you
Gets you through the night

Em C G D

May your journey be rewarding

May love be your sacred bond

May your friends still hold your interest

May you always carry on

Harmonica Break G C

Know that it is not selfish

Save some love just for yourself

Too often we're our own worst critics

Put self forgiveness on the shelf

Chorus

May we aspire to be patient

In the face of things we can't abide

May we strive for the wisdom

Of knowing we're not always right

Harmonica Break G C

And when the day is over

Look yourself right in the eye

Find the pleasure of the knowing

You gave it one hell of a try
